A Safe Haven for Joplin’s Children
Increased Support Needed for Children’s Haven as Homelessness Rises
The Heart of Children’s Haven
In the heart of Joplin, Missouri, Children’s Haven stands as a beacon of hope for families in crisis. Since its founding, the organization’s mission has been simple yet profound: to provide a safe, nurturing environment for children when their families face an immediate, temporary disruption to care. Whether a parent is hospitalized, dealing with homelessness, escaping domestic violence, or facing another crisis, Children’s Haven ensures kids have a warm, supportive place to stay — a place where they can simply enjoy being children.
Serving More Children Each Year
According to executive director, Stephanie Theis, 2024 was a year that tested the organization’s capacity like never before. After seeing a staggering 115% increase in shelter nights in 2023, the demand continued to climb last year. They provided safe haven for 373 children, providing 3,510 nights of care.
“We want them to enjoy just the joy of being a kid,” says Theis, underscoring the organization’s commitment to preserving childhood even in the most difficult circumstances.
Rising to Meet Increased Homelessness
Families facing homelessness, in particular, turned to Children’s Haven at an unprecedented rate. This sharp rise in need reflects a larger, troubling trend. According to the 2024 Point-in-Time Count, Joplin’s homeless population is now at its highest since the pandemic and this rate doesn’t seem to be slowing. The population of unsheltered residents has increased by 111% over the past year alone—a dramatic spike that mirrors national challenges but has unique roots in Joplin’s history.
